Jake “Ragnarok” Shafer began tattooing in 2016 as a street artist in Detroit. Eventually he moved his way to Traverse City to further pursue his career. Jake joined the dream team at Pinups & Needles in 2021, to learn advanced techniques to master multiple areas of his career, under master tattoo artist Charles “Baby Handz” Comber. Jake has a wide range of specialties but he particularly enjoys tattooing neotraditional and color pieces.

Hana is a local artist. She has been creating art since she can remember, her family’s first home in TC still has her little painted toddler foot prints in the basement!
She recently started painting again to rehabilitate herself from surviving stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that she recently beat in March 2020.
She loves to paint people the most and dabbles in the abstract. She also enjoys creating commissioned portraits for people.
FINE ARTIST
Growing up the black sheep in a conservative, WASPy family, I knew I’d probably always stick out at least a little. Life in a small California Central Valley town definitely isn’t as glamorous as it may sound, in high-school my peers and I referred to our town as Methdesto (Modesto).Nonetheless, what else is a young, artistic queer to do other than spend all their time drawing.
I’ve spent years filling sketchbooks and to this day I’m not totally sure how many I have built up in my storage. As I got older I slowly expanded into sculpture and painting in a more studious attempt at developing myself as an artist. My favorite sculpting mediums are wire, polymer clay, and ceramics! I also adore oil painting, but I’ll need a totally cat free space in order to really work on one (since they stay wet so long and cat hair flies). I’m also slowly trying my hand at comic development with a few story-lines I’ve begun writing up.
It’s no secret that my collection is an eclectic one, and for ages I believed that that made it “unsellable” because there was no overall rhyme or reason to my pieces. I simply make the art I like to see, I make expressions of momentary feelings and ideas. I love going with the flow of each day and seeing where it takes me, allowing myself to create and live as freely as I can.

Mursi tribe woman of Ethiopia. Lip plates begin six months to a year before a Mursi girl is to be married. A small incision is made in the bottom of her lower lip and then a stick is placed. Larger disks are inserted over time, coupled with having the bottom two front teeth knocked out to accommodate larger plates. It has been said, the bigger the plate, the stronger the woman.
